Whether it’s with bowls, bongs, or joints, there are many ways to smoke your favorite strain. But for those who want to try a new method or experience their smoke a little faster, then investing in a dab rig might be a good place to start.
Dab rigs are typically glass devices designed for vaporizing concentrates. They are also called oil rigs since they specialize in vaporizing the oil from concentrate extract. So, if you ever hear the term "oil rigs," know that it likely refers to dab rigs.
At first glance, it's easy to see how oil rigs—or dab rigs—look similar to bongs. They don't function that differently either: Like bongs, dab rigs require water at the base to filter the concentrated vapor through the mouthpiece.
While bongs and bowls are intended for use with dried flower, the intended use of dab rigs is with concentrate and wax. Dab rigs typically provide a better flavor profile than bongs and bowls, which is more effective for the seasoned smoker looking for something new, or simply more enjoyable.
Understanding the mechanisms behind how dab rigs work is one of the more essential steps you can take before investing in one. Since dab rigs have different pieces and accessories, it's good to become familiar with each component's terminology and roles.
Typical dab rigs comprise five parts, although many variations can be found, like percolator dab rigs or external recycler dab rigs. To start simple, here's what's you’ll find with typical dab rigs:
- Quartz Banger
- Quartz Nail
When you're ready to start, you'll begin by heating the banger with a torch. The banger is the removable piece that you’ll place the concentrate in, and can be comparable to a bowl in a bong. Then, you'll place a dab of concentrate inside of the nail. The concentrate will burn and vaporize through the downstem, which will reach the base or chamber. As the mouthpiece extends and connects to the chamber, you'll inhale the resulting vapor through the mouthpiece.
Once you know how dab rings work, it's pretty simple to learn how to operate them yourself. Even so, you want to be sure that you're doing it accurately to ensure that you're using both the rig and concentrate to their utmost potential.
To start, you'll need:
- A dab rig
- A quartz nail
- A torch
- Concentrate of your choice
- A dab tool
- A carb cap (optional)
Step #1: Heat the Nail
Unlike other pieces, you first have to heat the nail. People enjoy dabbing because they get to have more control over the type of hit they're going to take with the temperature gauges.
High-temperature dabs, give off a more harsh/intense taste. Low-temperature dabs, produce cooler, smoother, and more flavorful dabs—so it all depends on your preference. It's easier to control the temperature you want with e-nails, while torches will variable heat up and cool down times based on the combination.
Method #1: A Butane or Propane Torch
A lighter won't heat the nail sufficiently enough, so you'll want to invest in a handy torch of some kind. When using a torch, you can tell when the nail is heated adequately if it turns red hot or if you hold your finger a couple inches away from it and can feel the heat.
Method #2: E-nail
If you want to skip using a blowtorch, you can invest in an electronic nail (E-nail). E-nails are safer than torches, which is why many people opt for them since it's one less piece of equipment to lug around. E-nails also let you control your dab rig's temperature so that you can fully decide on the amount of exposure, which in turn affects the flavor levels.
Step #2: Wait for the Nail to Cool
Some may say that this step is optional, but it's a good idea to go for it anyway. You'll want to let the nail cool for about ten seconds to allow the concentrate to soak in so that you can enjoy the dab's full flavor.
(Some people take the flavor seriously, while others are less interested in that aspect. If you better identify with the latter, then do Step 3 without waiting for the nail to cool at all.)
Step #3: Place the Concentrate on the Nail
Once the nail is adequately heated, you'll place your preferred amount of extracted concentrate in the nail with your dab wand. The dab wand is an essential part of the puzzle since it safely sets your concentration in the nail, which can reach several hundred degrees.
Step #4: Inhale, Exhale
When the concentration is inside of the nail, begin inhaling immediately through the mouthpiece. The heated concentrate vapor goes through the water in the chamber and out through the mouthpiece as vapor. Exhale whenever you feel comfortable, although a few seconds should be sufficient.
Step #5: Place a Carb Cap on the Nail (Optional)
Depending on how many hits you want to take, you might want to invest in a carb cap.
A carb cap is a small piece of equipment used to cover the top of your nail once you've placed your concentrated dab inside. The cap is there to trap the heat as your dab vaporizes. This also helps redistribute air flow inside the bucket. Using a cap could help you plan to take several hits and don't want to reheat each time.
Step #6: Clean the Nail
If you don't clean your nail immediately after you're finished dabbing, you run the risk of residue sticking to the nail, which can change your next dab's flavor.
If you use your dab rig regularly, then it's a good idea to clean it out rather often.
You'll need a variation of:
- Isopropyl Alcohol
- Res caps or plastic bags and rubber bands
- Paper Towels
- Pipe Cleaners
Before you get started, make your cleaning solution. It's a good idea to find a container or bucket that's large enough to accommodate your dab rig if you so choose to soak it. When you've added enough isopropyl alcohol, add ¼ to ½ cup of salt, and mix it up until it's almost (but not completely) dissolved.
Step #1: Take Your Dab Rig Apart
Taking your dab rig apart means removing any accessories like the nail and anything else you may have. Then, you can either place the dab rig inside the container, or pour the mixture inside the dab rig so that it's full.
Step #2: Place Your Res Caps
Res caps are for closing up any openings in your dab rig for cleaning or storage.
If you don't have any res caps, then you can use plastic bags with rubber bands. The key is to keep the cleaning solution there without leakage since your next step is to shake it.
Step #3: Shake the Dab Rig Lightly
Once the mixture is inside, shake your dab rig lightly. This will help get the cleaning solution moving around your piece, which is especially helpful if you have stuck-on resin.
Step #4: Let the Dab Rig Soak
Allow your dab rig to soak. How long you want it to soak depends on your preferences—but the longer you let it soak, the more squeaky clean the dab rig will be.
If you're feeling impatient and plan to use it later in the day, then soaking it for 30 to 60 minutes will be sufficient.
Step #5: Rinse and Dry the Dab Rig Thoroughly
It's crucial that you only rinse out your dab rig with room temperature water. Anything too hot or cold may cause cracks in the rig. Be sure to rinse a few times thoroughly to ensure all of the isopropyl alcohol, salt, and resin is gone.
Once it's thoroughly rinsed out, let it dry by placing it on a mat or dish rack. You can also speed up the process using paper towels, pipe cleaners, or cotton swabs. Double-check that it is thoroughly cleaned out of any leftover isopropyl alcohol and salt to avoid putting yourself at any health risks.
We've already talked about using your nail with dab rigs, but before you commit to one nail, it's good to be familiar with the other types of nails available:
- Quartz Nails: Domed-shaped quartz nails are standard with almost all dab rigs. However, they are not a great long-term solution since they can break very easily.
- Adjustable Nail: Adjustable nails are also dome-shaped but are a crowd favorite because they can easily adjust to any sized dab rigs.
- Universal Nail: Like adjustable nails, universal nails can adjust to any size or shape joints but can be used without a dome.
- Daisy Nail: Daisy nails are usually quartz, which is more durable than glass or ceramic—plus, they're easier to clean.
- Sidearm Nail: Sidearm nails are made of sturdy titanium and intend to keep the heat away from your face. This is good if you don't want the 700-degree Fahrenheit heat too close to you as you dab.
- Banger Nails: A quartz nail that works well with carb caps.
- Honey Bucket: A honey bucket nail is a hybrid between banger nails and vapor domes with a removable arm.
- Electronic Nails: Ideal for those who don't want to use torches.
However, there's something so classic about using nails. They're inexpensive and small—so all you have to do is ensure that you buy a nail of the right size for your rig and heat it with a torch.
If you've ever shopped around for dab rigs, you might notice that they can get a little expensive. You can find smaller dab rigs for around $30 to $50, while normal sized rigs easily surpass $100. When you begin investing in dab rigs and all of their accessories, the price may seem steep, but trust us when we say that the extra expense is worth the experience.
But why do they cost so much? Dab rigs require a level of special understanding. They're complicated pieces that require effort to make and use—so when you decide to buy one, you want to be sure that you're spending your money on something quality.
